Vegetarian diet for weight loss

A new scientific report suggests that a vegetarian or vegan diet is an effective way to lose weight. From a press release about the report, published in Nutrition Reviews:

Vegetarian populations tend to be slimmer than meat-eaters, and they experience lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other life-threatening conditions linked to overweight and obesity. The new review, compiling data from 87 previous studies, shows the weight-loss effect does not depend on exercise or calorie-counting, and it occurs at a rate of approximately 1 pound per week...

"There is evidence that a vegan diet causes an increased calorie burn after meals, meaning plant-based foods are being used more efficiently as fuel for the body, as opposed to being stored as fat," says (researcher Dr. Neal) Barnard. Insulin sensitivity is increased by a vegan diet, allowing nutrients to more rapidly enter the cells of the body to be converted to heat rather than to fat. Link

I can witness to the ability to GAIN weight on a vegetarian diet, too. We Tanuki are vegetarians. Today for lunch I had 2 slices of cheese pizza and a big salad with lots of yellow salad dressing on it. And a peach ice tea. Burp.

This is true. It is never a good idea to stuff yourself full. Especially if you eat tons of CHEESE!!!!!!
I like cheese myself, but I know I can gain weight from cheese. Pizza is one of the best foods on the planet, I think.

Tanuki, you've been among humans so long you've forgotten that members of your species do eat small animals (even toads--yuk) and marine life. You're natural omnivores.

Hi, I am a vegan, (37 yrs old) and find that it is a very healthy diet. More and more poeple are now turning vegan. We sould eat what is the most heathy food, and the most compassionate. There are many things that are natrurel, yet they are undesireable, for example, some species of primate engage in canibalism. and we could say that it is naturel, yet if a person engaged in canibalism he/she could not justify it by saying it is naturel.

Yours, David

Hi Kitsune,

Don't remind me =) I'm really depressed right now with the human world. Do you ever think about going back?
